Mata ni Pachedi.

Our Vision.

"The fallen leaves tell a story."

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional textile art form that originated in Gujarat, India. It is made by use of Kalamkaari. "Mata" refers to the Hindu goddess, and "Pachedi" means a cloth or a painting hung behind an idol or a religious altar.

When people of the nomadic Vaghari Community of Gujarat were barred from entering temples, they made their own shrines with depictions of the Mother Goddess on cloth. This ingenuous solution is believed to be the origin of Mata ni Pachedi, the sacred art, which is now revered by all.

The vision of our art is rooted deeply in our faith. Each bold stroke describes and tells a story to be seen by every person. Our vision involves the use of authentic materials, natural dye-colors, and millennia-old techniques to achieve perfection. The purpose of Kalamkaari is to immerse the viewer into a supreme display of artistic prowess and storytelling. Ultimately, we create art pieces that are meaningful and impactful that will resonate with you on a personal level. Our belief and devotion is the driving force behind Mata ni Pachedi, and a key element in creating a work of art that is both unique and memorable.

Our Work.

"Blessed are the artists, for in their hands the impossible is made real."

Cotton fabric is first de-starched and then treated with turmeric paste to prepare it for absorbing the color. The outline of the figures are painted first, with black color prepared from jaggery & iron.

After the resulting red color is extracted, tamarind seeds are filled in and it's decided whether the paint areas supposed to be white or left blank. After the application of colours, the fabric is boiled in alizarin solution to bring out the color and then washed.

For washing, the artisan goes to the banks of river Sabarmati, as the cloth must be washed in running water only, so that excess color flows away instead of staying on the cloth. It takes days of patience and dedication to prepare a single piece of art.
